چکیده

Synfire chain models store and retrieve hetero-associative sequences of firing patterns, thereby explaining basic aspects of the neuronal processing of temporal information. Existing models were based on McCulloch–Pitts or integrate & fire neurons and therefore neglect most physiological properties of real neurons. Here, we study a model with conductance-based neurons and both, heteroand auto-associative couplings which support synfire vs. attractor activity, respectively. We show that the speed of synfire recall is influenced by slow neuronal variables and is sensitive to the ratio between autoand hetero-associative synapses while quite insensitive to background activity. We then propose a bidirectional synfire model where the duration of states in a synfire chain is variable and can be coordinated by a timed but otherwise unspecific external signal. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. Presentation Title: Feedback Connections Stabilize Propagation of Synchronous Spiking in Cortical Neural Networks Location: Wcc Hall A-c

Abstract: Precisely timed action potentials have been related to stimuli and behavior in monkeys, indicating that the neural coding may be based on precise spike timing of cortical neurons, synfire chains. An assumption that sensory information may be encoded by precise spike timing has been challenged by the critical question of whether synfire chains can successfully propagate through hierarc...

Potentiation decay of synapses and length distributions of synfire chains self-organized in recurrent neural networks.

Synfire chains are thought to underlie precisely timed sequences of spikes observed in various brain regions and across species. How they are formed is not understood. Here we analyze self-organization of synfire chains through the spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP) of the synapses, axon remodeling, and potentiation decay of synaptic weights in networks of neurons driven by noisy external...

Propagating synchrony in feed-forward networks

Coordinated patterns of precisely timed action potentials (spikes) emerge in a variety of neural circuits but their dynamical origin is still not well understood. One hypothesis states that synchronous activity propagating through feed-forward chains of groups of neurons (synfire chains) may dynamically generate such spike patterns. Additionally, synfire chains offer the possibility to enable r...

STDP Provides the Substrate for Igniting Synfire Chains by Spatiotemporal Input Patterns

Spike-timing-dependent synaptic plasticity (STDP), which depends on the temporal difference between pre- and postsynaptic action potentials, is observed in the cortices and hippocampus. Although several theoretical and experimental studies have revealed its fundamental aspects, its functional role remains unclear. To examine how an input spatiotemporal spike pattern is altered by STDP, we obser...
